Support for user representatives
User representatives are patients and carers who help improve treatment and care for everyone with a lung condition by sitting on NHS respiratory boards, networks and patient groups.
We help people become user representatives and support them in their vital role.
Want to become a user representative? Have a look at the role description we have put together, then contact Bethany Bateman on

Are you a user representative? We can help you
We’ve put these tips together from your fellow user reps. If you have any other advice, please get in touch and let us know!
- Don’t hesitate to ask for explanations
If forum members are using acronyms you’re not familiar with or you aren't sure what they’re talking about, ask for clarification. You can't do your job properly if you don't know what’s being said.
- Be persistent
You have been asked to be part of the health forum to give your opinion and to represent a group of people. Don’t be afraid to make sure you’re heard. Don’t be backward with putting your views forward!
- Be patient
It might take a little while to get used to the language and the flow of the meetings, but don’t give up after the first try. As you see here, there are lots of resources available to help you.
Preparing for meetings and untangling the jargon
Want to prepare for an upcoming meeting? Or perhaps you want more information about something discussed at a past meeting? Take a look at the information we have about lung conditions.
The BLF online community is an internet forum for everyone affected by lung conditions including patients, carers, family and friends. It's a space where you can blog, ask questions and even answer other people's queries. If you have anything you’d like to share with your fellow user representatives, don't hesitate to post it here.
Still haven't found what you're looking for? Do you have more questions or an experience you would like to share with us? Want to learn more about how to become a user representative? Get in touch with Bethany Bateman at the BLF on 020 7688 5557 or PatientVoice@blf.org.uk.
