Case studies

We have people who are affected by lung disease who are willing to share their story with the media. Whether it’s a quote, opinion or an interview, we may have the person you’re looking for.

Carole, 57

Carole insists air pollution nearly killed her. She suddenly became short of breath while out walking. Unable to breathe properly, she collapsed. Her recovery was slow, and she was housebound for two-months. Now Carole never risks going out without first checking DEFRA’s pollution forecasts.

Ron, 56

Ron was a successful triathlete, until forced to give up running due to severe breathlessness. He was diagnosed with the lung condition idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and given a life expectancy of just three to five years. Now determined to make the most of everyday, Ron’s working through a bucket-list, cruising in the Middle East, sightseeing in New York, with more globetrotting to come.

Anne, 74, and Peter, 76

Golden marriage couple, Ann and Peter both have lung disease. Through an understanding that comes from half-a-century of marriage, they care, encourage and support each other. Peter has severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Ann has idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Natalie, 35

Natalie first realised something was wrong when she became out of breath walking up Tube station stairs. She was diagnosed with the lung condition, sarcoidosis. It had a huge impact on her life. Unable to commute because of severe breathlessness, she was forced to leave her job in private banking in the city. The BLF’s Keep Active Keep Well programme has since taught Natalie how to manage her breathing. This has improved her lung health, and helped her adjust to living with the condition.

Janet, 63

You’re never too young to get lung disease. Janet was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), aged just 36. She also has asthma. Janet wonders if passive smoking contributed to her condition. She worked in a bar for 10 years, and also had a job as a cashier, employed in a small office, where colleagues smoked.
