We took on a triathlon in memory of our mum
Dan and Matt’s mum passed away from COPD in July 2018. They took on a triathlon in her memory, raising money and awareness.
Mum had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for nearly 15 years. She heavily smoked throughout her adult life but gave up when she got her diagnosis. She had oxygen therapy in the later years, but sadly passed away in July 2018.
A long road of training was ahead of us
We knew we wanted to do something in her memory. So, we decided to take on a triathlon the following spring, along with our friend Jono. This would be a huge challenge for all of us: a 400m swim, then 28km bike ride finishing with a 5.8km run. None of us were particularly active, so a long road of training was ahead.
Training was intense. We’d be up at 6am for early morning gym sessions, late night running and even swimming lessons! There was lots of hard work leading up to the event, and we had a fair few injuries along the way too.
But it was all completely worth it. We weren’t aiming to win or anything like that, just complete it, which we all did. We also smashed our fundraising target. We aimed to raise £300, split equally between our 3 chosen charities. We ended up raising £640!
We chose to raise money for the British Lung Foundation, for all the work they do to raise awareness and fund research into lung conditions. We also chose Lancashire Mind, a local charity doing amazing work for mental health, and ward 37 at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, for all the amazing support they gave us when mum was in last year.
The challenge was tough, but we’re not stopping there!
The triathlon was tough, but really good fun. And after thinking this would be our first and last, I’ve signed up to do a Tough Mudder event next month!
If you’re just starting out on an exercise challenge and don’t know where to begin, I highly recommend using the NHS couch to 5K plan. It gets you running 5km without stopping in 9 weeks. None of us had ran since school and downloading this gave us the perfect starting point.
For a group who were quite unfit, it’s amazing what we’ve achieved. Raising money for 3 incredible causes gave us the motivation for those early morning rises and helped us cross that finish line.
